There were a lot of baseball icons that graced the sports page of my local paper – but I got to say one of the inspirations that I like to remember was a kid that grew up next door to me, in a GI bill housing lot, called Eddy. He tried everything in creation at least once – just for the experience.
For example, at the time there was a Saturday morning show called Captain Midnight. It was about a war hero that devoted his life to fighting crime. The guy lived on a mountain top, had this cool rocket ship, and a backpack of jets that made him fly. But the coolest thing of all was his helmet. It was pointed, had two eyelets and a fin along the back.
Well, one day Eddy decided to test the theory of “will it fly”, so he made this helmet out of an old paint can, some aluminum foil, and swimming goggles … got up on his fathers roof and “ to the upper regions we go!”
Eddy didn’t quite make it …. He sprang off the garage roof and right through to top of his father’s 51 Buick convertible. His father was ready to send him to the upper regions… if you know what I mean, but the kid came out of the car with his father’s wedding ban that he found tucked in between the cushions in the back seat of the car.
The old man couldn’t grab the ring away from Eddy fast enough … just as his mother was came into the driveway and wondered what was going on.
Eddy and I were only about ten years old at the time .. but old enough to know Eddy was blessed with dumb-ole-duda-luck! And that kid and his antics while growing up was an inspiration to me that said..some guys got it … and some guys don’t!
