Stepping back vs. stepping to the side

I wanted to hear people’s opinions on whether out of the windup a pitcher should take their rocker step directly back or to the side.

I know that by stepping back a pitcher keeps themselves in line with home plate (probably helping control) and builds momentum into their leg lift but I don’t know the arguement for stepping to the side.

I have always stepped to the side just because I find it awkward to stckward, it just doesn’t feel right to me

In another topic, asking about if a windup is really needed, people started talking about how a big part of the windup is just to sort of relax yourself. In that sense, it might not really matter.
