My road to D1 baseball

I’m 14 years old and a right handed pitcher.Im a freshman and just finished my AAU fall baseball season.im homeschooled because the schools in my area are really bad but ill be going to a high school just outside of where i live now.My dream has been to play D1 baseball since i was about 4,so i have been really going to work hard for about the last year and a half to try to reach my goal of D1 baseball.

Height 6’2
Weight 155lb [ im very skinny so my main goal this fall is to get bigger.

Pitches
4 seam fast ball 74-76
2 seam fast ball 72-74, 3-5 in break going away from a right handed batter
circle change 64-67 with a little bit of sinking action to it and it sweeps away from a right handed batter.
curveball 62-64 a 12-6 break i use at as a junk pitch but it does have alot of break.

Here are some of my stats:
ERA 1.26
IP 57
Runs 11
ER 8
walks 6
hitting
OBP .573
Avg .489
i also comitted no errors at short stop
and we play a 25 game schedule

Okay here are my goals by next spring i want to weigh 165
i want my max pitch velocity to be 80
i want my era to be under 2
i want to make one of the best AAU team in NC

today im going to long toss, run 1.5 miles and do my core work out and STRETCH

“Blue devil” does that mean you are from the Grenncastle blue devils in PA

no im from north carolina

I was a Blue Devil in Vine Grove/Radcliff Ky…and my son was a Clay High Blue Devil in Green Cove Springs Fla…lotta them Blue Devils around America apparently…sort of a situation where …No imagination for a school mascot and name???
Blue Devil…

BlueDevil -

Good luck in achieving your goals. I thought I would weigh in with some advice. I am in my senior year of HS and started pitching log when the fall of my freshmen year. I haven’t updated it as much lately - but there is a whole bunch there, which I wouldn’t recommend just copying. I too want to go to a D1 school but time is running out and looking back I would make these suggestions & changes.

  1. Train in the offseason - with the focus on improving maximal strength. At 14 you probably should start lifting weights and doing medicine ball workouts - lift on a schedule, get a partner, & be serious about it. Track what you do and the weights you lift. Also read up on what lifts you should do. Everyone has an opinion - but I suggest tuff-cuff & Eric Cressey’s. Also LankyLefty a poster on this site has a good log. The goal should be to become stronger - since getting stronger will allow you to apply more strength to developing forces when you pitch.

  2. In the off-season - Throw to maintain arm strength and flexibility. This will help to counter-balance any “decrease in flexibility” that you may get from lifting.

  3. Really look hard at playing fall-ball. You only have so much time in a day and if fall ball isn’t helping you or isn’t required then I would almost say don’t play it - especially if you are a pitcher only. I found that 2 or 4 innings a week of fall ball was just enough to get in my way of doing other workouts. Now if you aren’t going to workout or do something It keeps you engaged with your friends.

  4. Your goal is your junior year - that isn’t saying if you aren’t there in your junior year it is all over - but that is your target - not your senior year. Start going to showcases and contacting colleges about your interest in them. If you play on an AAU team let them know it.

  5. Keep a log!

  6. Find a good pitching coach.

Good luck.

thanks kidmullen for all the suggestions.
as for my schedule on working out i work out 5 days a week.with alot of medicine ball and core work.i long toss 3 days a week and have a bull pen twice a week.
i played fall ball for a AAU team here in nc but we had our last game 2 weekends ago.so now im really focusing mechanics, strength, and endurance.

about a good pitching coach i have scott bankhead he played for 6 mlb teams was the 16th overall pick in the 84 draft.i also have 2 older brothers who pitched in college baseball but injuries ended their career.

so thanks for everything and good luck for achieving your goals.

leg press 4x10 225,225,235,245
lunges 4x10 with 30,30,35,40lb dumbbells

not going to throw today.

25 games with 57 IP is a little too much for a 14 year old pitcher. How spread out were the games and how many ip per game?

we played every other week end.so i pitched one of the games.and about IP i went by a pitch count of 85 pitches in a game.

been really busy in last couple days so couldnt post but on wednesday i did my core workout, thursday i did upper body, friday legs, today i threw and topped out at 74 but hit my spots really good.with great control of my change.2morrow ill just toss some.

well found out today that i broke 3 fingers in my left hand playing basketball.
so working out my upper body will be hard to do so ill be doing alot of core and leg work out. im still going to throw but with no glove.

todays work out consisted of me doing
Squats 4x10 200,205,215,225
leg extensions 4x10 115,115,125,135
calf raises 4x10 110,110,120,135
leg curls 4x10 95,95,105,115
leg press 4x10 225,225,235,245
lunges 4x10 with 30,30,35,40lb dumbbells
running a mile and a half

today i did my upper body and ran 20x25 yard sprints.
bench press 3x8 115,125,135
bicep curls 3x10 20s,25s,30s with dumbbells
tricep extensions 3x8 20s,20s,25s with dumbbells
pull ups 4x7
seated dumbbell press 3x10 30s,30s,35s
chest butterflies 3x10 95,105,115
3x40 medicine ball push ups
it was reall hard to work out with 3 broken fingers but todays work out felt really good.i am down to 150lb but ive got alot stronger.so i think the weight gain will come soon.

and does anybody have suggestions on what kind of protein i should buy

Blue Devil- I think you are overtraining your nervous system.

I don’t think he is over training. I think he is just working hard and trying to get better.

I’m sure you have gotten a cut or a scrape on your skin before. It takes quite a while for it to completely heal. It’s the same thing when it comes to your muscle tissue or nervous system. I completely agree that he is working hard and trying to get better. The thing is there is a difference between working hard and working smart. But they will both get you somewhere.
