An interesting read on modern youth sports

I just finished Play Their Hearts Out: A Coach, His Star Recruit, and the Youth Basketball Machine by George Dohrmann. Its about AAU travel basketball depicts how kids as young as 11 are being corrupted and exploited by “grassroots” basketball coaches looking to make a buck.

The book is very well written. I really recommend it for any youth sports parent or coach. There is no travel baseball in my area, but if it is anything like travel basketball in southern California, I’d keep my distance. Yikes.

My opinion having played travel ball for a while is, that it’s like everything else in life. There’s really good, really bad, and in between. Ours has been a great(ish) experience so far.
