ok so i was watching the home run derby last night (great ending even though i dislike the yankees) and after the game the announcers were talking about how justin verlander was not going to pitch and jered weaver was going to replace him. do you guys think weaver deserves the top spot or would you still like to see verlander pitch? are there any other players you think made the team just because they are popular with the fans and not because they are the best at their positions? and lastly do you guys think that the coaches and or the players themselves should vote for players instead?
In answer to your question regarding Justin Verlander and Jered Weaver: the reason Verlander is not the starting pitcher in the All-Star game is because he pitched Sunday. There are several pitchers in the same boat—they pitched Sunday, and so they will not participate in the All-Star game. Others are out because of injuries of one kind or another—for example, David Price is on the shelf with something called “turf toe” which is exquisitely painful, and so he’s being replaced by the Yankees’ David Robertson (who’s a veritable strikeout machine).
It’s not only the fans who pick the players, thank goodness. The managers pick the pitchers—'twas ever thus. And the same thing goes for replacements due to injury; for example, Derek Jeter needs a couple of days to recover from the physical and mental strain of reaching the 3,000-hit mark, and Alex Rodriguez just had arthroscopic surgery to repair a tear in the meniscus of his right knee and will be out for at least a month. So it’s not all the favorites who will play in the All-Star game.
