My son is a LHP and is about 15 and a half. He use to have velocity troubles but it seems in the last year or two he’s really developed and went from throwing around 63 when he was 12 to now sitting from 80-85 mph. Should he do offseason velocity training or just workout and lift weights and such? Is this a good velocity to be at his age?
if he’s throwing 80-85 as a freshman/sophomore he’s well above average - especially as a lefty. However, there’s no reason he can’t continue to do both velocity and weight training in the off-season. What’s not mentioned is his accuracy or his off-speed pitches. In my opinion, what needs to be worked on in the off-season is what he struggled with in-season.
