Good strategy for taping. It might be easier to get a batting tee and use that as a target. You can still hang a batting glove from it if you want or you can paint a section at the top of the moveable inner tube and adjust it up and down in the zone as well as easily repositioning the tee inside and outside. Also, the rubber tubes from the batting tee may not scuff up the balls as much as a metal fence post. A small pop up net behind home plate would also stop the balls before they hit the fence and become even more scuffed up from skipping along the dirt.
At any rate, I praise your use of available objects and using them to your advantage. I know baseballs are expensive, so keeping them in good shape would seem to be worth the investment in the tee and net.
