I definitely learned this the hard way, taking a funny bounce off my palm and into the chin at shortstop, waiting for a hard hit ball to get to me at mid-depth. I made the throw, but it was hard to concentrate after that.
Ever since then I've been taking the bounce that I see as best (doesn't mean I get it right all the time lol) and it's really improved my fielding when I'm out there. Last thing I want to do is let a pitcher down, having been let down on the mound many times.
Any techniques for hard rollers that you're coming up to but hit a hole in the ground or something and rocket up? I have a friend who's played baseball all his life and is deathly afraid of the ball because one incident.
